The Bartley Court Shelter is much more than temporary accommodation. It provides a range of services designed to help individuals stabilize their lives and move toward permanent housing.
Services Available
Residents have access to:
Daily meals
Showers and laundry facilities and shared washrooms
Secure storage for personal belongings
Referrals to community services
An on-site Overdose Prevention Site
Medical services, including nurses and a physician several times each week
Mental health and substance-use support
Employment and housing information
Resource room with books, games and movies
Clients may also participate in the PEER Program, which provides paid work opportunities earning approximately $20 per hour while helping individuals develop employment skills and work experience.
Who Can Stay?
Admission is limited to adults aged 19 years and older who are experiencing homelessness or severe housing insecurity. Priority is given to individuals with connections to West Kelowna.
Residents must agree to:
Follow house rules
Treat others respectfully
Maintain good neighbourly behaviour
Help keep the property clean
Comply with a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying
The average stay at the shelter is approximately three months while staff work to secure more permanent housing.
Many homeless individuals decline shelter due to trauma, mental illness, addiction, fear, shelter rules, or distrust of institutions. The Bartley Shelter's outreach team actively connects with vulnerable individuals in the community, encouraging and supporting them to seek shelter and services.
Shelter Operations
The shelter operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Current operations include:
Two staff members on duty around the clock
Additional daytime case management staff
Fully fenced property
Security camera monitoring
Mobile outreach team serving the surrounding area
On-site health care professionals several times each week
Although the shelter previously employed dedicated security personnel, that position is currently unfunded. Staff continue to monitor the property and work closely with outreach teams and community partners.
