A major decision is about to be made that could affect our neighbourhoods, our environment, our property values, and the future character of our community for generations.
On May 26th at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, the City of West Kelowna will hold a public hearing to give residents an opportunity to speak on the proposed West Kelowna Transmission Project (WKTP), including transmission line route options and whether sections should be installed overhead or underground.
Let us be clear: West Kelowna and the entire Westside absolutely need a long overdue secondary power supply line. Reliable electrical infrastructure is essential for public safety and the long-term stability of our rapidly growing communities. However, supporting the need for a second transmission line does not mean residents should remain silent about how and where this infrastructure is built.
Too often, communities only realize the long-term consequences of major infrastructure decisions after construction begins and it is too late to make meaningful changes resulting in loss of green space, negative community impact, and infrastructure projects placed too close to homes and schools.
This project should concern every resident of West Kelowna, not just the people living directly beside the proposed transmission routes.
The selection of the route and the choice of 100-foot-high overhead lines versus underground lines could influence property values throughout the community, impact natural areas, and set an important precedent for how future large-scale infrastructure projects are in West Kelowna. This project will also show whether local and provincial governments are willing to genuinely listen to residents and consider community concerns before making decisions that will affect the city for decades to come.
Participation matters. Even a short statement at the hearing can make a difference. Public hearings become part of the official record and demonstrate to Council that residents are informed, engaged, and paying attention.
Please attend the public hearing on May 26th. Be informed. Be proactive. Be heard. West Kelowna’s future depends on community involvement today.
Sincerely,
Concerned Residents of West Kelowna
