Upcoming Opportunities to Get Involved
Why This Project Matters
West Kelowna currently relies on a single transmission line to supply power to roughly 70,000 westside residents. That means outages can have widespread impacts, and a second supply is needed to improve reliability as West Kelowna continues to grow.
City Council has been a strong advocate for this project over the years, including raising it with the province during multiple Union of British Columbia Municipalities Conference meetings. While early planning dates back several years, the project is still in the planning and consultation phase, with the project completion, once expected in 2023 is now expected around 2032.
The WHAT, WHY and WHEN is not in question, it’s the WHERE and HOW…

The WKTP project is necessary for improving energy reliability, however, high-power overhead transmission lines bring lasting and highly visible changes to the neighborhoods they pass through. From the imposition of large, industrial structures on residential landscapes to restrictions on trees, green space, and future development, the impacts can be difficult to reverse.
Residents of West Kelowna are encouraged to stay informed and take part in ongoing conversations about the West Kelowna Transmission Project—an important initiative led by BC Hydro to strengthen power reliability in our community.
Community Voices & Ways to Get Involved
There’s been strong community interest in the project so far. A resident-led petition, “Powering Our Future Without Harming Our Neighbourhoods,” has gathered over 570 signatures, supporting Route Option 1a as the most direct, cost-efficient, environmentally and socio-economic choice. Residents have also been actively attending engagement sessions and sharing feedback with project teams and Council.
